Technically: The Blog
Black, White and Re(a)d all over!
With more twists and turns than a badly-coiled cable, ‘Technically: A Musical’ follows a group of techies in the days leading up to the debut of a brand new student show. What could go wrong? This summer ‘Technically: A Musical’ goes on tour with performances taking place at both Edinburgh Fringe and Durham Fringe Festival! This meta musical brings backstage to centre-stage. It’s the morning of the tech run for a fresh, new student production, and the technicians have stayed up all night to make sure their cues are perfect. But their plans quickly change when the Director has a revelation and insists that the entire production be reworked! Now they have less than a day before curtains up and the show is in bits. Props are broken, the cues are all wrong, and one member of the crew has a dark secret that is about to come to light… With less than a day until curtains up, the techies must band together to save the show! Will they manage to make the Director’s dream come to life? Will Lights get her moment in the spotlight? Or will Stage Right set the stage on fire? With more twists and turns than a badly-coiled cable, this brand-new student-written musical is sure to have you hot-glued to the seat! This is, after all, ‘Technically: A Musical!’ If you want to see what really happens behind the curtains this is not one to miss! Tickets are available now for both stops on the tour: In Durham city centre the show will take place at The Sir Thomas Allen Assembly Rooms Theatre on July 24th (18:00), July 27th (19:15), and July 28th (20:30), and you can get your tickets from the Durham Fringe Festival website: https://durhamfringe.co.uk/events/technically-a-musical/ In the thriving, historic centre of Edinburgh, ‘Technically: A Musical’ will be performed at the exciting new venue Greenside @ George Street every evening from August 19th-August 24th! Tickets can be found on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival website: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/technically-a-musical ’Technically: A Musical’ is written, produced, directed, and performed by university students at Foot of the Hill Theatre Company (FHTC). St Mary’s College is home to FHTC one of the many theatre companies at Durham University. Initially conceived by Shannon Hill and Jacob Marshall, with music written by Luke Mallon and Faith Gorton; the writers are four working-class northern students who have been involved in many a production with FHTC and other Durham University-based theatre companies over the years and decided to shine a light on the hard work that too often goes unnoticed behind the scenes. “Technically really is a love letter to all of the people who make theatre come to life; the sound and lighting designers, the operators, the stage crew, the producers, and yes, even the directors (we love them really).” - Shannon Hill (Co-Writer and Co-Director) “When approaching the music for Technically, I wanted it to reflect the theatrical world, much like the script. Thus, I constructed a patchwork of genres through the music as a reflection of the variety of theatre our technicians have worked on.” - Luke Mallon (Musical Director, Composer and Lyricist) This fun and upbeat insight into the chaos that occurs before the curtains open takes the classic musical genre and flips it on its head to bring backstage to the forefront in a mix of comedy and heart that celebrates and recognises the hard work often never seen by an audience. Nominated in all categories at Durham Drama Festival 2024; winning three awards: Best Supporting Actor, Best Sound Design, and Best New Student Writing! ‘Technically: A Musical’ then went on to win The People’s Choice Award for favourite show from the festival at the Durham Student Theatre annual awards.
